Hello, Bloggers, the British Independent Film Awards have just announced their winners and even if they might not have much influence in the awards race, they are still fun to discuss. Let's take a look:
Best British Independent Film: Ex Machina
Best Director: Alex Garland, Ex Machina
Best Actor: Tom Hardy, Legend
Best Actress: Saoirse Ronan, Brooklyn
Best Supporting Actor: Brendan Gleeson, Suffragette
Best Supporting Actress: Olivia Colman, The Lobster
Best Screenplay: Ex Machina
Best Achievement in Production: Kajaki: The True Story
Best Technical Achievement: Ex Machina (Andrew Whitehurst, Visual Effects)
Best Foreign Independent Film: Room
Douglas Hickox Award (Directorial debut): The Survivalist, Stephen Fingleton
Best Documentary: Dark Horse: The Incredible True Story of Dream Alliance
Ex Machina came out really strong, allowing Alex Garland to collect more hardware today besides a Debut Director Award at the New York Film Critics Online and being a runner-up at the Boston Society of Film Critics for the same award. He has also received nods from the Washington DC Area Film Critics Association for Director and Screenplay. So I think he's proven himself a definite dark horse in either Directing or Writing. Saoirse Ronan continues her dominance in the Best Actress category and even if he likely won't be in the Best Actor category, Tom Hardy has received positive ink for his work in Legend. If anything, it'll help his cause for The Revenant.
Overall, I think this is a solid group of winners and I cross my fingers that, with the strong showing it has here, Ex Machina will gain more awards traction.
