Oh, what a lovely day is my reaction to the Oscar nominees.
First off, I am SO pleased to see Mad Max: Fury Road score big with 8 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for George Miller. It didn't get a Screenplay nomination or anything for its actors. But I don't think anyone expected to get cited there. Also, one of its actors did score a nomination which I'll get to shortly.
Another pleasant surprise is seeing Room, the best movie of 2015, land a spot in Best Picture as well as a surprise nomination for director Lenny Abrahamson. Nothing for lead actor Jacob Tremblay or Joan Allen, but it did also get a Screenplay nomination and of course, a Best Actress nomination for Brie Larson.
The Revenant scored big with 12 nominations, including one of the most pleasant surprises of the morning, Tom Hardy for Best Supporting Actor.
I'm also glad that Charlotte Rampling pulled through and got in Best Actress for 45 Years. Brooklyn getting in Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay as well as Best Actress for Saoirse Ronan was also very nice.
Now onto the big shocks. The Martian will be up for several Oscars next month. But directing isn't one of them. Ridley Scott getting left out was a HUGE surprise because it seemed like he could actually win given his overdue buzz. Also, Carol got left out for Best Picture and Director. Nothing for Quentin Tarantino in Best Original Screenplay for The Hateful Eight or Aaron Sorkin in Adapted for Steve Jobs either. Lastly, no "See You Again" from Furious 7 for Best Original Song.
Overall, I was very pleased with this set of nominees. Even if the Best Picture lineup is quite Caucasian like last year, with the inclusion of Brooklyn and Room, it's thankfully not too male.
